I picked up a Xiaomi Mi TDS water quality meter. It’s about $4.50 in India; here in Turkey, it came out to 48 lira delivered — a bit of a markup, but still cheap enough to be worth it.
I tested it in a few different places. Istanbul tap water came out to around 160 (TDS — total dissolved solids, measured in parts per million). If it’s coming from a hot water tank, it reads closer to 170, which counts as “hard water.” Run it through a filter and it drops to about 15. I also tested it on ultra-pure water, which read a flat 0 (confirming the device itself works correctly). Bottled and jug water came out anywhere between 6 and 120, depending on the brand.
That number represents how many milligrams of dissolved particles are in a liter of water. Based on these readings, Istanbul tap water is genuinely drinkable. That said, the important caveat is what those particles actually are — if they’re all heavy metals, even a small amount is bad news. But logically, a lower particle count generally means real effort went into treating the water, even if it doesn’t guarantee the specific contents are harmless. For comparison, dip this meter in mineral water and you’ll often see 300–400 — that’s not a sign of bad water, it just means it’s genuinely mineral-rich. Different types of water need to be judged against their own category, not a single universal number.
Different bodies set different thresholds for what counts as drinkable: some sources say under 1000, the UN uses 600, the US uses 500. My own personal comfort threshold is 200. Under that, I’d say it’s fine to drink directly, or at least fine to use in tea or soup, since cooking kills off any bacteria anyway.
Worth noting on the flip side: I’m honestly not fully confident that bottled and jug water is automatically the healthier, heavy-metal-free option either — it depends heavily on the condition of the plastic or metal bottling equipment at the facility, how the storage tanks are maintained, and how much of a concern the plastic itself is. It’s not like the alternative is synthesizing pure H₂O at home either — that’s literally mineral-free “empty” water, which isn’t necessarily better for you.
My honest suggestion: municipalities should hand these meters out to the public. If I can buy one from a Chinese brand for 48 lira, a local government could easily get a Turkish manufacturer to produce them for a fraction of that and distribute them through public offices. It would give people an actual number to trust instead of just guessing — and if public confidence in tap water improves, that naturally means less demand for bottled water shipped in environmentally costly plastic. Worth solving now, before we’re stuck buying our own air from private companies down the line too.
